We're doing our seniors on a professional digital camera now. The difference is
we can do 100 to 200 exposures where we used to do 24 to 36. You can see the images
right after the photo session, make decisions and get your pictures ordered. One stop.
I do all the retouching here before it's sent to the lab. And if you procrastinated until a little past
too late, I can, in a pinch, get your portrait for the annual in 24 hours.

In the studio I like to work with simple settings, white, black or painted canvas.
I like that simplicity. But then, I can also make up a background. I like that too.

This is Jade, making faces. Breaks the tension of posing. Not everything she did was that way.
| Portrait sessions are conversations in which some photographs are made. They are collaborations. Most of our portraiture is done on location. And most of it is outdoors. A cloudy sky provides the best light for portraiture. Bright sunshine is the worst, although that last little bit of sunshine squeezing over the horizon can do some wonderful things. Generally if the sun is shining we work in open shade -- that is, in the shade with open sky on one side. And nearly always, if the subject is in the shade the background must be also. Midday sun provides a very short shade so most of our outdoor sessions are in the late afternoon or evening. |
| Every time I make a rule I break it. When preparing for a portrait session you need to think about what to wear. The clothing you choose needs to fit the purpose. And it needs to fit the place. You wouldn't wear high heels on a hiking trip. So if your session is in an outdoor location your clothes should be outdoorsy, not too fancy. In a portrait you don't need colors that stand out in a crowd. It's better to wear quiet solid colors that won't compete with you for attention. There's nothing that dates a picture quicker than "stylish" clothes. It seems that the more in style they are the more out of style they go. When in doubt talk to us. You can try different clothing options. The main thing is to be yourself. And if you have many sides to yourself, be yourselves. |
